Looking for a little advice on how to paint ABS plastic. I have contoured splash guards installed on the car now. They came in black and look pretty good just as they are....but the other day I saw a car like mine with the splash guards painted the color of the car and they looked much better.
Anyway, these are supposed to be paintable, but I'd like to know if there is some special paint or additive to get better adhesion to the ABS...or special prep work. (I will be taking them off the car to paint them.)
Thanks,
Pete

Hi PeteB,
If I was to do it, I would take them off, wash them down with prep salt or grease and wax remover. I would go to an auto body supply store, and buy an adhesive called "8 11". It's a clear formula that you put in a paint spray gun and spray on plastic surfaces to help make the paint adhere. Naturally, you spray it and wait fifteen minutes, then spray your primer on. Body shops also use it when they have to paint around door handles and areas hard to sand. Or for blending. There is also an aerosol spray that you can buy just for plastics to make the paint adhere. There are many brands out there and I'm sure an auto body supply store should be able to set you up with something. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Thanks FatherLarry...
It will be a winter project. I'm going to start getting the material together that you mentioned until then. I'll be sure to post a pic when it's done

Here's a pic of how the splash guards turned out. I didn't do it myself like I planned, I had them done professionally.

If I didn't have the Springer, I would have gone for the Road King myself. I really like the looks of it.
