View Full Version : 63 Wipers do not park

First, I had never run the wipers before doing a body-off restoration. New wiring everywhere. After getting it back together I tried the wipers. Wipers ran all the time. So I removed the washer unit and mount plate. I then removed the relay and switch; cleaned the contacts and reinstalled. Wipers now work correctly Off is OFF, Lo is LO and Hi is HI. However, they do not park when shut off. I did not move/remove any other parts from the mechanism. I did lubricate.
I was told that there is some kind of 'Park' relay/set somewhere in there. Can anyone give me some help on what the problem may be and how to fix.
I checked the 63 Service Manual and found no help. The wiper unit breakdown showed no parts identified related to parking, Chilton's 63-83? guide was no help, nor the AIM.
Pics would really help.
Thanx to any and all who reply,
Gary

It's very true in what you're saying about the tech manuals. Corvette Kotze has a manual for such a problem as you're having. The problem is in the motor and many people replace the motor because of this particular problem. When Corvette Kotze gets back from vacation I'll have him look through his arhives and see if he can find anything so we can scan a pic to show you. So far you have done everything right. Here's a somewhat related link on the forum here about a similar wiper dilemma that Corvette Kotze gave some advice on. Hope this helps. Let us know how you make out.

Problem solved (almost). Thorough inspection of the gearing and parking mechanism revealed a broken drive pawl. I found a '64 Chev wiper motor that has the same internals as my '63 Corvette and am replacing the drive pawl. Also, a good cleaning and regreasing will help the overall operation.
The 63 Shop Manual does not have very good pictures of the innards. Would be nice to find a good description of how this unit operates. Like what happens when the switch is turned to the Lo position, the HI position, the OFF position, and the washer button piushed. There are two coils that operate a switch in the wiper unit and a lever in the washer unit. Also, how the park mechanism works.
Oh well, hope I won't need to know for a long while.

Glad it worked out. A lot of the Chevy parts from Impala, Chevelle, Camaro, Firebird were interchangeable. They also have a book that you can buy that will tell you what parts are the same for different GM vehicles. Mike can't find the book either, so I guess we're out of luck there. But, I'm glad you found the problem, and thanks for sharing.
