Wondering if you have any ideas on what might be going on with my 1990 tach. It reads about 3,000 at idle and almost immediately jumps to 6,000 and stays there. The service manual isn't a lot of help. Thanks

The service manual isn't a lot of help. Thanks Hello RetireeToy and welcome to the site. First of all it sounds like the tach is probably bad. However, there are a few things you will want to check before condemning it. The tach gets its information from a single wire at the distributor. It is a white wire that plugs into the right side of the distributor cap. It is right next to the large red wire. You would want to check for a good connection. Next, check the continuity of the wire from the distributor to the gauge cluster. You can do this with an ohm meter with the circuit disconnected. In order to get to the gauge cluster connection you would have to remove the entire gauge cluster from the dash. This may be difficult according to your experience. Hope this helps.:chevy: MKOTZE
