Mr. Pache,

I'm new here and I have to say this is one of the most informative and technical sites that I have been on that seems to give very personal attention to its members. I hope it grows.

I have been hearing a lot about the synthetic ATF. A lot of people have been saying, especially in their ZR1's and Z06's that it is superior to the Dexron III. Is the Dexron III half synthetic, or not? I heard that the synthetic also stays a lot cooler under heavy driving conditions. Is this true? I realize that Dexron III is recommended in C5's for warranty purposes, but it also states that anything that's equivalent to Dexron III or GM specs is acceptable. Mobil ATF reads that it is equivalent and superior to Dexron III. How do you feel about these evaluations? Thank you Mr. Pache.

Dexron III is a GM performance specification. It does not define what the base fluid or formulation is. Hence, oils meeting Dexron III specifications can be either mineral or synthetic based. The factory fill Dexron III is mineral based. Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF easily meets Dexron III specs. and beacuse of the nature of synthetics, has improved high temperature stability. Also, synthetic stocks offer improved low and high temperature viscometrics over conventional base oils. Hence its performance is superior to a mineral based product.
