Went to Maine and checked out the car. Car was as described. Only one minor problem. There is some play in the steering box. Is this a numbered part. If it is where should I send it to be rebuilt? If not, should I buy a new one or reconditioned one. Also found a site with reprints of original shop manuals. Both manuals for the 70. Are these the best or are there after market manuals that are better?

Congratulations!  Nice choice and best of luck with it. If that's all that's wrong with it, that's pretty good. Maybe Corvette Kotze can rebuild the unit for you or at least tell you where to get one.

Good luck with your new purchase. Bet you're excited. Love those 70's. About the play in the steering box, there is an adjustment and you may be able to tighten it up, but I would ask Mike. Also, make sure that where the steering box connects to the steering shaft, that there are no signs of wear or tears.
Again, happy to hear you took the plunge. You're the first new buyer on the forum.

You actually have 3 choices first you could have it rebuilt by someone or you can buy one that has already been rebuilt. You could also buy a brand new one, which is available from GM. You can also buy a brand new aftermarket unit. I have listed the choices in order of cost. In other words, the first one is least expensive and the last choice is most expensive. There are two adjustment on the steering box. However, considering the mileage on the car it's probably best to get a new one. The best manuals you could get would be the GM manuals. There are two manuals for your car. One is the service manual and the other is the overhaul manual. I have found many inaccuracies in the aftermarket manuals. Good Luck.:chevy: MKOTZE
