View Full Version : Digital Temp Readout
Year of Car 1996
On startup, the digital temp readout will be normal (for example, today it read 53) and as you drive it seems to raise normally.
Once it hits 193 it stays there even during runs on the track.
The gauge display corresponds with the digital readout.
NOTE: upon startup, both fans go on
I unplugged both fans to check out the displays. With the fans unplugged, the digital readout stopped at 193 but this time the
gauge display rose steadly up into the 220 range and was rising at which time I shut the car off and reconnected the fan plugs.
No overheating problems and fluid level in system remains constant.

   Hello FXGS, Let's first review how a stock system should work on a 1996. First of all the fans should not come on until the temperature reaches 219 degrees. Obviously you must have a modified program to bring the fans on at a lower temperature. The digital display on your vehicle is controlled by the computer sensor. The gauge display is controlled by it's own sensor. It sounds like one of the sensors is inaccurate. Here is how you can diagnose the problem further. You want to disconnect the wiring connector at the cooling sensor for the computer. You will find this in the front of the engine screwed into the water pump housing. With it disconnected it should have an extremely cold temperature on the digital display. Now take a wire and jump the two wires at the connector together. Now the reading should be very hot. If you get these results then the computer sensor is not functioning correctly. If it doesn't check out this way give me the results and we'll go from there. Good Luck.:chevy: MKOTZE
Thanx for the response. I'll try to check this out tomorrow evening and let you know the results.
As far as the fans coming on as soon as I start the car,
although I just recently put in a 160 degree themostat, it was not until I did that that the both fans started to come on immediately and I did not do any ecm reprogramming.
