View Full Version : Mixing Viscosities

Hi, Bob. I, like many others, have been plagued by oil consumption problems due to the oil getting into the intake via the PCV valve/system. I know that some of the Mobil 1 racing teams mix viscosities in their racing engines so with this last oil change I gave this practice a try myself. I am now running in my 'Vette a mixture consisting of 4 quarts of Mobil 1 10W30 and 2.5 quarts of Mobil 1 15W50 and, so far, it seems to have cured the problem.
Now I drive my car pretty hard, it's kept in a heated garage, and it's rarely driven in the winter and then only after being thoroughly "warmed up." With these facts in mind (and other than the few horses I understand I'm probably losing due to its higher overall viscosity), do you see any detriment to my using this mixture?

Thanks for your time!

Other than a slight loss in fuel efficiency or power, there is no problem in mixing the 10W-30 with 15W-50. You probably end up with an oil around 10W-40. However, since GM does not reccomend the use of 15W-50, it could cause some warranty concerns.

Thanks, Bob! I was looking for a green light on this and you've given it to me!

As far as the warranty is concerned, my views on that can be summed up by the question, "You mean these cars come with a warranty?!"

If you take a look at my mod list, you'll see that I left my warranty behind long ago.

Thanks again!
