Hi Mike,

Mike I think I have a '99 late model hardtop, and I want to put the HUD in it. They said that the '97-early '99 cluster, doesn't have the plug socket for it, but the late '99's and up have it. I also heard that you have to drill mounting holes for the projector. How big a job is it and how expensive would it be? Also, would I have to replace the windshield? What parts would I need to order?

How would I know if I have a late or earlier model?:spin:

unless you can find a junk yard windshield you are looking at about $2,200.'s for a new windsheild... $400.'s for the option on a new 99 HT. :(

Thanks for the input Y2KFRC. I'm hoping when I go to Carlisle this year that maybe I can pick up the parts for it. I know someone in the windshield business and I may be able to get it at cost if I decide to go with a new one. I heard that it will project pretty well on the regular windshield though.

I'll see what Mike says about how extensive a job it is. I did hear its about a 6 1/2 hour job. And, if I have a late model '99, everything should be there except the holes that hold the brackets for the projector. What I'm worried about is if the harness on the projector will plug into the cluster, if the cluster actually has the socket. Thanks again.

Hello WinmarJ, No, I didn't forget about your question and I am in the process of doing some research. I will get back to you as soon as I have the appropriate information. Hang in there. I'll be talking to you soon.:chevy: MKOTZE

How would I know if I have a late or earlier model?:spin: Hello Winmar, sorry it's taken so long to get back to you but the info on this is limited. There is a label on the left door of the car that will tell you the date it was manufactured. This will confirm that you have a late 99 model. Also, the necessary plug connector in the cluster is not present on all 99's. There is a better chance that it is on the later 99 model. However, it is possible that the plug is not there on a late model. Unfortunately, the only way to confirm if you have the plug connector is to remove the upper trim dash pad. This will give you access to the cluster and then you will be able to see if the plug is there or not. There is a special windshield that you can get for the heads up display. However, there are other people who have had acceptable results using the standard windshield. I have not personally seen the results of using the standard windshield so I cannot give my opinion about this. The new windshield is about $2200.00 list from GM. Assuming you have the correct cluster you would need the HUD projector and control switch. There is no extra harness it comes with the projector. I have not been able to obtain a price for these items. Yes you are correct you have to drill holes for the projector. You would also have to cut a hole in the upper dash pad for the projector. As for the cost and time involved it would depend on if you are removing the windshield or not. If you're removing the windshield it is actually easier to drill the holes and therefore less time consuming than drilling the holes with the windshield in place. Hope this is helpful. Let me know what you decide.:chevy: MKOTZE

Thanks Mike,

I'm going to wait for Carlisle and maybe I can pick up a used HUD there. How do you determine if it's a late model '99? After which date would be late model?

I have a friend I grew up with and went to school with, and he owns a glass installation company. He said he can pick up one for me aftermarket for about $200-$300 his cost. He said that all the glaziers use them instead of factory, because they are cheaper and they have to meet gov't standards. I think he said they're made in Mexico. Wow talk about a markup. After reading his post on how to remove and install the windshield, Father Larry convinced me that it's best to have my friend do it. I guess I'll take him and his wife out for a nice dinner. Will you be down at Carlisle? Maybe I can meet you there and if I see a HUD you can check it out for me. Thanks again Mike, you are really a great guy.:chevy:
