Read your post on the Mobil 1 forum. Just welcoming you aboard on the ZR1 forum. Hope you see it. As far as the ZR1 stock up against the new C5 hardtop, all reports pointed that the ZR1 came very very close in handling, but not quite as good as the C5 in balance and handling. It's a great machine though, just the fact that every one wants to try to measure up to it. I guess it would be something if they put an LT5 in the new C5 and just made the body a little bit smaller, but to tell you the truth, I would like to see a 427 in the C5. Welcome to the forum.

Glad to have you on board, Mark LT-5 and Team ZR1. I'd like to see a redesigned 427 with the new technology today in our C5's. It would give the Viper a run for it's money and get us that pony car feeling back.

My 99 C5 is a 372 stroker Mallett engine and though it is nice it still does not compare to the LT-5 esp at topend speeds.
Mallett is also doing 427s so they are out there.
With the drive by wire and other electronics I do not feel as safe at speeds over 150 MPH on public roads as in open road racing as I did with the ZR-1 at 180 MPH speeds.
I know of 3 C5s that have crashed in ORRs but not 1 ZR-1 has ctashed and the drivers of those C5s say the car just cut loose, no warning, since the electronic steering fools you as speeds lift front end steering wheel feels the same as doing lower speeds and thus to be safe slow steering down on C5 as they do with C5-R by using a different size pulley for steering.
I thought doing ETs at drags of 12.2 at 118 MPH using stock tires was hard to do with the ZR-1 but with all the goodies on the C5 it still cannot beat the ZR-1 for launching the C5 is worse then the ZR-1.
My topend at drags are the same but the ET is not as good on this '99 even with the Mallett suspension changes including the Penske race shocks.
Those with ZR-1 and C5s I do custom e-proms and flash calibration tuning.
Let's Go a Racing . . .

Welcome Team ZR1! I too own a Z. I love it. I love it because of the LT5 engine. Being in the auto body business, I personally wish they would put it in a different cage other than the C4. When I take the targa top off and if I get on it, the body flexes tremendously. For road racing, that' not a plus. Especially, when you get on it with all that torque the body really flexes.
I had to do a restoration for a guy who owned a gull winged Mercedes, and that was a unitized chassis. But, they built that unitized body on a hardtop and it was very well thought out and engineered, especially the step rails when you get in. It's much deeper with more steel reinforcement behind it. The C4 is very flimsy and thin to reduce weight and cost. Love my Z, but I do wish it had a chassis.
My personal opinion is that a chassis makes for a better performance vehicle and better ride. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the ZR1, as it is a unique and limited production car, but I have to admit that the C5 is a better all around in styling, structure, engineering and technology. Let's face it. They got this small block to do almost what a ZR1 can do and to me that's pretty amazing. And, for less money. But, they still compare it to our cars. I guess they want to let the guys who spent $70K down slowly. But, we still own the KING, because they still can't conquer it definitively.

My '95 is the KING still and will always be. I like the body style of the C5, but I wouldn't trade off the LT5 for a body style. Maybe, except for a '67! But, I'd really have to think about it. The King of the Hill Still!
Also, nice to have you on board Team ZR1.

Thanks,
A 5 point harness bar will tighten up that flex when targa top is off. I found no problems with frame design at high speed events so it is not as bad over the C5 frame is,
In fact the C5 is too tiight, no give on hard launches to flex a bit and help shift weight back over the tires.
For repair or mods the C4 is much easier to work on, in the C5 to do any real drivetrain work the whole assend has to come out and the drivetube is not fun to take off/on either
So I would never be unhappy all the years of owning ZR-1's just too bad not many performance mods came out for the LT-5 but even in stock form she is a sweetheart.

Thanks,
your lucky I think the 94 and 95 MY had the best HP output.
They have a faster ECM and the low restriction cats work very well. Consider swapping the exhaust system after the cats with a 3 inch system, the LT-5 loves to breath.
If you think the ZR-1 hauls stock, I ran one at 1,000 lbs lighter, she was a rocket in spinning RPMs up or down, not a good street driver though :yakyakyak
