Did you know that the first emblem for the Corvette had the American flag on it? Just a few days before the introduction of the new Corvette at the Motorama on Jan 16, 1953, GM management told the styling team that that couldn't use the emblem because of the likeness of the American flag. They said it wasn't proper and it was actually illegal. The styling team worked all night and new emblems were fabricated and installed on the Motorama car. Hence, the emblem we know today, a black and white checkered flage and a red Chevrolet bow-tie and fleur-de-lis.
Chevrolet is an American company, and a melting pot of people work for them, which stands for America. So, what's wrong with the American flag as an emblem on an American car? Anyway, see the link for what the original emblem looked like.
