Hi Bob, nice to have you here.
Bob, if I use that new oil that you mentioned "super syn", can I still put an additive such as STP. It seemed like STP always worked good for me, because it kept the walls of the cylinders coated for less wear of the metallic parts on start ups. Is this true? Or is the synthetic oil good enough without the additive?:wavey:

Supplimental additives, Mouse Milks> are not reccommended by any oil manufacturers or engine builders. Basically, STP is simply a VI improver with some zinc suppliment. Its benifits in oils such as Mobil 1 is questionable and in fact might even be detrimental. All qaulity engine oils are formulated to specific performance requirements. Additives could possibly upset the chemical balance of an engine oil. When using a good qualiy oil such as Mobil 1, do not use additive suppliments.

Hi Bob,
In my '63 split window fuelie, I have been using 10 20 30 GTX Castrol, non synthetic oil and then adding the STP 8 cylinder oil treatment. Being it's fossil oil, is mixing the STP detrimental to the chemical balance, or does that only apply to synthetics? You see some of the racing teams with the STP stickers on the cars. Do they have a chemists, like yourself, on board to customize the additives to make them compatable? If I'm asking a stupid question, please feel free to tell me.

STP is a VI improver. Your Castrol already has a VI improver in it. Adding STP in essence changes the VI and viscosiy of your oil. It will not hurt the additive system in your oil, but will change the viscosity. Use the viscosity you need and STP should not be needed.

I guess the old rule of thumb doesn't stand anymore with the new syn oils their using today. Can't argue with you, because you're the boss. Thanks for the info. I must say it's great to have someone with your credentials here.

Good to know, but how do I know what vicosity I need? It's a 1963 split window fuelie. Pure stock. Low mileage. I put about 200-300 miles per year if I'm lucky. I use 10w 20w 30w. Should I switch to synthetic? Someone said that I may get oil leaks because the oil may be thinner. Is that true? I would like to go with the Mobil 1. What grade should I use?:banghead:

First of all, there is no such grade as 30W. You likely mean SAE 30. The only Wgrades are 0W, 5W, 10W, 15W and 20 W. I can send you an explanation of the grades if you desire. In any case, I would suggest that you use an SAE 10W-30 multi grade oil. Use of Mobil 1 will work well with your car.

Sorry, I did mean 10W 30 :o
I'm going to switch to the synthetic. Thanks for your help.
