Peeling rubber/vinyl interior..suggestions?

The interior unit around the stereo/climate controls is peeling... are there any recommendations regarding repair? I'm thinking of pulling the piece out and simply peeling all of the vinyl/rubber away... if i do that, what material would be a good replacement to sray or paint on there to protect the piece before i put it back into the console?
Also, are there any good diagrams out there to follow for removing that specific piece from the interior for repairs?
