View Full Version : C5 Tire Recommendations
:guiness: I'm new to the forum and need some recommendations on tires. '99 C5 convertible 28,500 miles on it and I would like to stay with run-flats but, boy they are $$$$$$$$ :yikes:
Should I stick with Goodyear or some other brand?
Strictly a summer car, I put her to bed around mid November.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!
Thanks in advance..

Hi, I have Goodyear Non Run Flats on my 2000 FRC C5, However that is what came with the car. There ok, but a little noisey and I am going to switch to Firestone Wide ovals they have a great Rating and almost 40% less cost with a much quiter ride, wet traction is great as well go to www.tirerack.com for a complete listing of tires for your new 99 corvette :shift: enjoy the Ride!!

Welcome aboard Tjn.
I don't know much about the Firestone, but I'm sure it's a great tire. I do know that people for all the years the C5 has been out, like the Michelin, either in a run flat or non run flat. Check the prices out on those as well. Tire rack is a good place to start. Also, the BF Goodrich, which is owned by Michelin has some good choices for Vettes and they're half the price of the Goodyear runflats. The run flats were good in their time when they first came out with the C5's, but like anything else they improving still. I personally don't like the run flats, because depending how you drive, the best you can get out of them is 22,000 miles, and being you can't rotate them. and the way the factory seats there alignment up they have a tendency of wearing on the inside and they are noisy.

Dear tjn,
The prices of Run-Flats are high, but for a reason. You pay for the Peace of Mind of knowing if you loose pressure, you can get to a tire repair facility without usually doing much damage to the tire.
For many people, the Peace of Mind is worth the extra cost.
I personally do not have a problem of repairing a tire that is not Run-Flat. I heve recently replaced my Goodyear F1 EMT's with the Sumitomo HTR ZIII tires. They are not Run-Flat tires. They do offer a good value and excellent dry pavement performance and look real nice on the car. These tires perform well in a daily driver scenario and can even take some spirited track operation too.
They do make the C5 sizes, as they are different front and rear, and the tire is not "Rotational"; meaning, that you can run them in one position only; so you can rotate these Sumitomo's side to side in the front & rear position. They only have "Outside" marked on the tire.
I carry a small compressor and a tire repair kit and a scissor jack in my cubby's in the back and ride along on a smooth and quiet ride compared to the Goodyear Run-Flats.
It is all a matter of personal preference.
If it is important to you to have the Run-Flat security, then, by all means research and find out which ones you want.
By the way, If you live in a Northern Climate and do mostly good weather driving, a High performance summer tire should suit you fine. Don't be alarmed by the statement that these type of tires are not intended for driving in snow or ice. Use your judgement here.
Just check them out....
