Bob,
What are your thoughts on the E10 ethanol? I noticed the other day that Sunoco has added Ethanol to it's 93 Octane. No more 94 Octane. I believe the only company here in PA, that hasn't added Ethanol is Hess. I know our Vettes aren't set up for Ethanol in respect to gas lines, sending unit, pickup and gas tank. GM states that we can use E10.
Is Mobil using E10? How do you feel about having ethanol in your system, when storing for the winter? I know that the boating and motorcycle community have been having bad experiences with moisture. I was just curious what you thought about it and whether or not you would use it. Mike at the shop has been getting some Vettes in with gas line and tank problems. We don't know if these people are gasing up out of state and using E85 instead of E10, or is the problem stemming from the E10 here on the eastcoast.
Larry:
I am not too current on tine fuel side. However, ethanol has only about 70 % of the BTU of gasoline, so fuel efficiency will be down for either 10 % or 85 % ethanol. It does have higher octane and burns a little cleaner because of the oxygen content. As far as I know, we cannot produce enough ethanol to make a major impact on our fuel supply. Also, it takes fossil fuel to distill it, so it is a loosing deal. I do not believe that ExxonMobil is adding ethanol to their fuel and the number of states offering is small. I was in Chicago this past weekend and noticed that the some stations in Illinois were offering the 10% ethanol fuel, However a car must be equipped to handle the ethanol. I will be in the lab next week and get more info.
