CORVETTE ZR-1/C4 GATHERING AT CORVETTE MUSEUM IS APPROACHING
May 9th - May 11th
One of the National Corvette Museum's rites of spring, as the Corvette community has come to know is The Gathering. The event started out some eight years ago with the first of many to follow at the Museum's Grand Opening in 1994. The ZR-1 Gathering which started this parade of Fourth Generation Corvette-focused event has grown in the last couple of years, embracing its siblings. The 40th Anniversary Edition Corvettes (Ruby's), limited edition Grand Sports Corvettes, Twin-Turbo Callaway B2K Corvettes and now the LT-4 C4 Corvettes. In just a few months, Fourth Generation (C4) Corvettes owners from all over will come together at the home of the Corvette for their largest gathering of the year. As members of the ZR-1 Net, Grand Sports Owners Association, 40th Anniversary Edition Corvettes Registry, Team ZR-1, LT5 Registry and LT4 Registry will prove May 9th to the 11th at the National Corvette Museum, the Legend is alive and well in 2002!
A variety of activities and seminars are planned to ensure that it will be an event to remember.
Event offerings to surely please both the spirited competitor and the leisurely enthusiast. From two days of ground pounding speed events at Beech Bend, numerous technical and informative seminar in the Chevrolet Theater, to the Museum's signature series of scenic road tours.
This year's highlighted seminar presentation will be Corvette's retired Chief Engineer Dave McLellan's presentation that covers his soon-to-be-released book, Corvette from the Inside: The Development History as told by Dave McLellan, Corvette Chief Engineer 1975-1992. This long awaited book stands out from the horde of existing Corvette books; for the first time, a Corvette Chief Engineer is telling the Corvette tale from his unique vantage point inside General Motors. But Dave brings more to this book than his inside observations from the 17 years he was in the Corvette hot seat at GM.He offers educated insights into the Corvette that came before his tenure, as well as the forces, climate and people who shaped this American icon. He was instrumental in the "concepting" of the current Corvette, the C5 that was introduced after his departure. Known as an advocate for pushing the envelope, Dave McLellan succeeded in making Corvette the best possible statement for American technology.
Other technical seminars featured for the weekend are two half-day Corvette School by none other than the legendary C4 Corvette Specialist, Gordon Killebrew. The Gordon's School, will be transplanted to the Museum for this weekend's offering. Please visit www.gordonkillebrew.com for particulars and seminar registrations.
The fun doesn't stop there. Following a barbecue hosted by the Strode's at their 1869 Homestead on Thursday afternoon, it's off to the races. Go-cart, that is! The local Naskart racetrack will again host the Corvette faithful. Particulars to be provided by ZR-1.Net. The "real" racing takes place on Friday, low speed autocross racing and Saturday, drag racing at Beech Bend Race park. And don't forget, our signature scenic road tours. Our highlighted scenic road tour takes you to Abraham Lincoln's birthplace on Saturday. Your gracious tour host is none other than Paul Schnoes. Paul is the retired Corvette Plant Manager (1984-1993) and together with his wife, Babs are very active Corvette enthusiasts and members of the 40th Anniversary Edition Corvette Registry. Only in South Central Kentucky will one see such gorgeous country roads. A leisure, pace as we enjoy what Mother Nature has kept hidden all winter long! Make sure you have a full tank of gasoline and plenty of film in the camera! And remember--Assembly Plant tours are available and will be held in conjunction with the event. You must be a registered participant to take advantage of these special VIP tours of the world's best automobile assembly plant.
