Hi, I would like to find out how to clean the engine compartment. On my other vehicles I use “Engine Gunk” I usually apply an entire can of cleaner to the compartment when the engine is warm, this includes under the motor as well.
I have been informed that this practice may not be advisable for the C5. Is this correct and what is the acceptable method for cleaning the engine compartment?

Thanks

When I do mine, I wrap up the alternator with plastic. Make sure the engine is warm and then disconnect the battery. I spray the engine down with engine cleaner, and then use a compounding brush to get in all the crevices, and then I wash it down lightly with the garden hose. I let it sit over night to dry out. Next day, I connect the battery and start it. I also try to cover as many electrical contact points as possible. I try to keep the water away from underneath the battery where the computer is. I only did it once and I had no problems, but I have heard of cases where you can short something out. I also noticed that the engine cleaner makes the aluminum a little darker.:dunno: :shift:

I use a spray bottle of windshield wiper fluid. It's a mild degreaser and won't harm rubber, plastic, etc or discolor anything. Just be sure to cover the important electrical stuff (I use the plastic market bags) spray on the wiper fluid, wipe it around with a rag or brush and hose off. I then use a leaf blower to get most of the water off, and then towel dry.
