I've heard some guys that have gone with synthetics after using regular oil have had problems with leakage. Personally, I would stay with conventional oil and keep up with your regular oil change schedule. There's nothing more important than regular oil changes.

thanks, that's what I thought. it would probably be wise to use a heavier weight oil on an engine this old. what do you think?

I moved this thread to Mobil One Tech Support. Here's a question that was given to Bob Pache, formulator of Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil. The answer seems to relate to your question. There may be more info on this forum. Check out all the threads here.

Switching to Mobil 1 will not cause an engine to start leaking oil. However, if you currently have a leaking condition it will become more evident because of the higher evaporation temps and also the cost. Generally, in a mechanically sound engine, oil consumption will be reduced andf performance enhanced. If your engine is sound, I would use Mobil 1 10W-30. Also, Mobil will soon release a 10W-40 grade of Mobil 1 in the serieas upgrade which might be more desirable in high milage and loose engines.
