There are a lot of things to take under consideration when buying a wreck, or a car that has been converted or modified.
The most important thing is knowing who the body shop is that did the conversion to a convertible.
Here are some of the things to take under consideration:
Having the right body supports to strenthen the body to become a convertible. M
Make sure it meets factory standards and federal laws. Some manufacturers do not recommend this type of conversion.
Wheter or not the car was seamed together in the proper way, with the right amount of welds, and the right procedure of fish plating and spot welds.
If the car tracks properly after it has been put together, and if the rear clip they used was bought at a junkyard or was obtained illegally.
There's a lot to look out for, and if you buying the car, just by going by the owner's word, I would stay away.
If you do decide to buy it, make sure you do a thorough investigation and bring it to a reputable body shop and have an experienced frame technician take it for a ride, and put it on a lift to look at every conceivable weld point, how the doors open and close, how the top fits when it closes.
I personally wouldn't touch it, if I didn't know the history and actually witnessed the conversion being done.
Hope this helps....good luck.
