Greetings Corvette lovers. This is my first time on this site. I purchased a 1998 Coupe with 27k miles on it. It has a few minor problems. The passenger window leaks when I wash the car. The weather striping looks ok and the window extends completely. The window has a 3 inch play when up all the way. Is this normal?
Any ideas to solve this problem?:shift:

Welcome aboard!
Can you clarify exactly what you mean by a 3 inch play when the window is up all the way? Do you mean that you can pull it from the top 3 inches out when pushing from the inside of the glass when window is closed? Do you notice when you drive it, if there is any wind noise coming from it? If that is so, there should be a wind stop in the center of the glass attached to the roof finishing molding. Looks like a black button. This prevents the window from separating and pulling out at high speeds. Also, are there any rattles coming from the roof panel? If you grab the panel when the window is open, is there any movement up and down? Get back to me and let me know. We'll go from there and take it step by step.

Greeting FatherLarry, the glass top rubber looks to be ok, the black button, or window retainer is also ok. I do have some wind noise however.
The 3-inch play appears when the window is completely in the up position and the door is open. The glass move about 3 inches from side to side. Currently I’m not sure what to do about it. Any help would be great.

Would the regulator give any symptoms of failures like noise, poor performance, or sluggish movement?
Is their any adjustment that could be made to provide a better seal on the roof?
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the help. I still need to measure the exact amount of play.
Has anyone done this before? Looking to identify and solve any problem areas with removing the door panel.
Thanks

Most likely it's not the regulator. Hold off on ordering a regulator until you check out the adjustments for the window.
When you remove the door panel, check the clamp nuts that are holding the glass in place. Check the weather stripping finishing molding on upper door skin. Also, check the window guide channels. If a regulator was going bad, then you could take the window and lift it up and down, and there would be a lot of movement if it were the regulator. In your case, you said that the window has play sideways, which would indicate a loose guide pin on the track, or clamp nuts as I mentioned before. You may have to remove the speaker to see the channels a little closer.
I would recommend getting a shop manual for your year Corvette, so you have it handy.
When panel is off, connect the switch and regulate the window up and down to see if there is any movement in any of the guide pins or channels. Be very careful that your hands are not anywhere near mechanism while operating.
If not sure of procedures, I would recommend having a technician or local dealer that you trust to look at it. Also, a good glazier might be able to help.
If you do loosen anything and readjust, make sure you mark the areas where you remove anything so you can replace it in the same spot. You'll see once you remove the door panel that there are rubber plugs where the adjustment nuts are. Remove with screwdrivers to gain access to them. Let us know how you make out.....good luck.

I will hold off until I get a service manual. I may ask my local dealer to check into it. I have an appointment next week for a fluid change out.

Rechecked the amount of play on the window. It's 1.5 inch. I contacted a friend that is in a local club, and he took a look at the bottom adjustment. He found that it has been adjusted to its limit. Interesting, that someone has addressed this problem before. I still have my appointment with my dealer next week.
Thanks for the help. You guys are great!
