Hi Bob,

I own a 2003 Mustang Mach 1 with a 4.6L DOHC and it's almost time for it's second oil change. The stock oil is 5W-20.

I want to change to Full Synthetic Mobil 1, but first want to make sure which number should I use.

Ford recommends the 5W-20.

I live in Puerto Rico (Caribbean), so it's a Very HOT weather here. Plus I drive in a lot of traffic jams daily.

Isn't 5W-20 too thin for a hot weather??.

Should I use Mobil 1 0W-20 or 10W-30??

Please let me know which one is better for my Mach.

Welcome aboard. Awesome car, that Mach 1! I believe they only made them for two years? 03 and '04? Is that a hemi in there? That engine looks awesome. I think it's the best looking mustang they ever made. I also heard some talk that they are limited and will be classics and the dealers are already asking over msrp for them. Do you have 1/4 times? What color is yours? I heard that if you put a blower on these engines and do some mods you can get over 600 hp and wipe out a Vette. Show some pics.

Also, be patient for an answer here. I know Bob is usually on the road with the Penske Racing Team, but he does check in and he's worth waiting for. He is the best around.;bt :usaribbon

Thanks TopVette!

My Mach 1 is Dark Shadow Grey. I don't have 1/4 mile times yet, but when it was bone stock, it made 275RWHP / 300RWTQ. It has a 32 valve DOHC 4.6L.
I would LOVE to put a blower this engine!

You can see it here:

I will wait for Bob's answer. I want to treat my Mach1's engine the best I can, she deserves it.

Ford recommends the 5W-20 grade because that is the grade they certified their engine with, primarily for fuel efficiency. Mobil 1 0W-20 is an acceptable grade and approved for use as an alternate to 5W-20 recommended by Ford. As regards oil operating temperatures, once the engine is warmed up, oil temps are pretty much uniform regardless of ambient temperatures. As for use of Mobil 1 10W-30, this would not void Ford warranty since the oil meets the GF-3 specification. Mobi/Exxon's official recommendation would be to use the 0W-20 grade in your Ford. However, I personally would use the Mobil 1 10W-30. The lower vis grade would help startability in cold climates, obviously, not a problem in your location.

Bob,

For a lot of guys who are buying the new Mach 1's and their giving it a breaking in period, would the 0W-20 work better for that breaking in period? Even though the engines are supposed to be pre broken in? Then go to the 10W-30 after 5,000 miles or so. These are some of the questions that I've seen on other sites. Thank you Bob. This gentleman was very anxious for an answer, that's why I emailed you. I know you're very busy and I appreciate your response.

Larry:
The engine will break in well with either. Remember, the Corvettes come out of the factory with Mobil 1 5W-30 and the Viper with Mobil 1 10W-30. Our NASCAR teams of Rusty Wallace and Ryan Newman use a special blend of Mobil 1 0W-30 Racing oil. None of these vehicles have a break in problem. With todays close tolerances, tapered rings and excellent cylinder bore symetry, break in is not a problem. In the older days this may not have been the case and special break in may have been required.
