would there be a problem in a 33 year old motor that only ran 10/30 or just 30 weight oil to go to a synthetic oil. I was told that the motor seals would leak is that true. Well I will go get a cheese steak and see what you have to say.

I have also heard that synthetic oil is much slicker and will leak worse than traditional oils. If you already have some oil leaks this may be a bigger problem than if you are drip free.

Finwolf,
I moved your post to Mobil 1 technical for Bob Pache to answer. Also, there is a similar post here that may help you out, but let Bob get back to you with more details if you need.

As far as leaks on older Vettes, most of that is a fallacy. I have a friend of mine that just bought a '66 327 pure stock coupe with around 87,000 miles, original owner. Except for one ball joint, the car is all original. On the engine just a water pump, belts and alternator have been changed. The gentleman he bought it from had changed over to synthetic for past three yrs. and the car has no major leaks that it didn't have when he was using the regular oil. As a matter of fact, the engine runs cooler. A lot of people who have straight axles and C2's have converted. One major fact they have noticed is that the engine temp stays cooler. I personally, would never go back to conventional oil. That synthetic oil is as good as a "good Philly cheesesteak".;bt

Mobil 1 will not cause any leakage in a new or old high mileage vehicles. However, if you currently have a leakage problem, it's use will not correct it. Also, if your engine has heavy deposits or sludge from misuse, it is possible that the detergent action of Mobil 1 or any other premium oil could cause problems. The Corvette is factory filled with Mobil 1 5W-30 and has met all GM test requirements including seal swell tests. In fact the GM4718M standard was developed with the use of Mobil i. Mobil 1 is superior to any other currently marketd synthetic or conventional oil and has millions of miles of field test data and engine test data, a claim that other manufacturers would have difficulty in matching. This is the reason that Mobil 1 is used as factory fill in a number of vehicles such as Viper and Mercedes.

Just read this and wanted to add my 2 cents. I've used Mobil1 in all my cars since it first came out and I am a big fan. My 1986 Ford (sorry) Aerostar has 230,000miles (no joke) and doesn't leak (not even a little) or burn any oil. I used to change the oil about every 5k miles but sometimes let it go much longer thinking that Mobil allows 15k between changes, so no harm done, and I was right. Can't vouch for other synthetics, but since Mobil1 was the original I will stick with it.
