Hello,

I just purchased my first Z06 and had a question about a couple things that I've noticed about the car. It's a 2003 with about 500 miles and seems to run strong.

When the car is running at idle and standing still it seems as if there's a motion of rotating mass that's moving the car from side to side a bit. Is this inherent to the Z06?

I've also noticed a sort of tapping sound upon acceleration and cruise that has a sort of valve tick noise. Is this also inherent to the Z06?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

thanks

Welcome aboard FD Boy.

The description that you gave of having a motion of rotating mass moving the car side to side sounds like a characteristic, rock at idle, that Z06's have because of the slightly higher cam. As far as the tapping noise, it could be a number of things. Exhaust noise is a characteristic of the Z06. Does it sound like something loose or ticking? To be on the safe side I would bring it to a dealer that you trust and have him check it out. I'm sure it's probably what I told you above, but it's hard to diagnose, because sometimes explanations here on the forum can leave a lot to be assumed on my part. Please check your oil before you do any more driving. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

PS. Did you buy it with the 500 miles on it? Was it from a dealer or private owner? If it was a private owner, did he give it breaking in time?

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I pretty much figured the items were characteristic of the car with it being of higher performance. I remember my 1969 L36 being a bit noisy and rough too. :)

I checked the oil first thing after buying the car.

As to the break in period the car has been driven carefully by the original owner since purchase. He's an older gentleman with a character of honesty. It was explained that the car was driven carefully for break in while he owned it, and that he picked it up the day it rolled off the truck with 5 miles. The car includes very thorough records contained within a three ring binder having documents sealed in plastic. Window sticker, CD brochure, video and manual are all there. It's really a great car and I'm happy to have found it.

I purchased the car with 556 miles yesterday. Here's a picture of it the first night in my garage next to my 1993 Mazda Rx-7.

PS I'll probably avoid the dealer, as I've not seen too many good things happen with warranty.
