 Corvette History  1963-1967

1963 1964  1965  1966 1967

1963-1967: 1963 brought the Sting Ray. There were hidden headlights and a fastback shape to the rear. Now famous for it's split rear window, the feature was not popular at the time. In 1965, 6 engines were offered for the Corvette and production had reached 22,229 models. Road and Track recorded a 0-60 time of 6.3 seconds in a 375hp fuel-injected model.

Engine options in 1966 dropped from 6 to 4, but  production increased to 27,720. A special hood indicated a 427-powered model. This was supposed to be the last year of the Sting Ray, but a last-minute delay continued the model into '67. Because of this mishap, there was a decline in production for the first time in 12 years.

1967 produced 22,940 models identifiable by their five fender vents. Engine choices jumped back to 6, including a 400hp edition of the 427 V-8 and a 430hp  version. Car and Driver tested a Corvette with the highest rated V-8 and recorded a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds.

Corvette history: Brand new body styles, the beginning of the "C2" Corvettes.. The convertible was priced higher, but today a 1963 coupe commands thousands more to purchase. Probably the 1963 coupe, with its rear split-window (only year), is the best known body style recognized by non-Corvette owners.  It was the first "fixed roof hardtop" without a trunk in Corvette history. (Today's 1999 Corvette Hardtop is the first fixed roof hardtop with a trunk.  The Z06 RPO debuted this year  on what was then a startling new Corvette, the 1963 "split-window" Sting Ray coupe, a car that would go down in Corvette history  as a defining moment in more ways than one. These Corvettes have recessed metal hood louvers, and 1963 marked the beginning for hidden headlights.  FM radio, the favorite of hi-fi buffs, comes to Corvette radios for the first time.  The new AM/FM radio, RPO U69, features 10 transistors and 9 diodes in its solid-state circuitry.

Corvette history: The coupe lost its split-window, and the louvered vents in hood were removed on both the coupe and convertible. The four speed stick became a very popular option to order. To distinguish from other mid-years   look at the exterior side vents (gills), two closed, and in a horizontal pattern. Steering wheels of all 1964's were a walnut grained plastic. A patriotic year: Red, White, and Blue were the most popular exterior choices.

Corvette history: First year for the Corvette Big Block with a mighty 396/425 horsepower screamer. This was to be the last year (until 1985) for fuel injection. Surprisingly, the Bid Block 396 engine option was about half as costly as the fuelie option! First year for teak wood steering wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, telescopic steering columns, and factory ordered side exhaust. Tell it from other "mid year" vettes by 3 vertical, open functional side vents (gills). Another quick way to tell 1963 to 1967 Corvettes apart is by their gas cap cover emblems.

Corvette history:  1966 had a new Turbo-Jet 427 Big Block with either 390 horsepower or 425. It was also the first year that backup lights were standard, and that headrests and shoulder harnesses became available. Tell it from other "mid year" vettes by 3 vertical, non-open side vents (lovre gills). Another quick way to tell 1963 to 1967 Corvettes apart is by their gas cap cover emblems.

Corvette history:  Birth of the most desirable, obtainable Corvette ever (according to Corvette owners) was the 427/435 big block with tri-power, currently some prestine restored convertibles fetch up to $90,000 on the market. Many  "luxury" items became standard features like rally wheels, odometer, tachometer, vinyl fomed filled buacket seats, carpeting, and clock. Redline tires were a flashy option. This was the last year of the C2 mid year Corvettes, you can easily tell it from the others by the 5 side, open vertical louver gills. A special feature of the "big block" 427 1967 Vettes was the stinger on the hood, usually in a contrasting color.
