Corvette History-1968-1972

1968  1969 1970 1971 1972

1968-1972: Many at the time thought this new body style was too drastic, but the third generation ended up being the most popular vette. As a consequence of a new emissions standard, 1971 models had lower power ratings. Throughout '71 & '72, models had little change in appearance but various modifications in options. Production for 1972 totaled 27,004

A Federal bumper regulation caused a change in body style in 1973. The Corvette now had body-colored bumpers for the first time.

Corvette history:  First year for the long running 350 cubic inch engine. Sting Ray became Stingray  (one word) and appear over the 4 vertical side gills -- this is an easy way to tell it from the 1968. Coupes were 1st offered in 1963, and this is the 1st year that coupes outsold convertibles. In 1969 the ignition switch was mounted on the column versus the dash.
